Aloha from Maui, Hawaii! I am obsessed with the violin – after a few decades off from playing piano, flute and guitar, I stumbled onto the incredible sound of the violin, picked it up, and haven’t looked back! I’m a bit of an “over thinker”, so I just love Lora’s detailed analysis and instruction. Plus when I “let go” and just play, now it sounds so much better because I have the fundamentals in hand, so to speak. 😉
Hi Rhonda!
It’s a strength to be an “over-thinker”…..as long as you know when to let go, as you put it.
Over-thinking is GREAT in the practice room, as long as you reward yourself with free flowing play-time each day!
Keep up the great work.
Love it! Must have put in a pin and forgotten …am only ine on cape cod!

Hi Lora,
I started RDV in 02/17. I started violin studies when I was 12 yrs old. I fell in love with the violin. However, I transferred to different school and lost out on violin lessons. I seen your wonderful and caring video on youtube, and I decided to try your online Beginner Adult Violin Lesson at Red Desert. You are one of the best instructor. I thought I would not be able to play violin with great intonation but here I am learning. I had another teacher before you. She had an accident and we lost touch. I am so glad I found you. I thought I could never ever play fiddle music as a bonus while learning proper violin techniques…I studied classical/suzuki at a very slow pace. I laugh every time when I practice because never ever in my wildest dreams could I imagine playing such refreshing and fun fiddle music on the violin. Thank you so much!
You are an inspiration, Desiree! Keep up the great work!
Hi there! I’m Deb Somfay, live in little old Salem,Ontario ,Canada and I’m a fiddle addict for the past 2 1/2 yrs! I started out learning in a fiddle learning group of 12 ,being probably the least experienced in both reading music and playing the violin at then age 62! I was also the third youngest lol! So..it just goes to show you never stop trying to learn something new right!? (I have played folk guitar for 50 yrs + but the violin is a whole new ball game!) A year and a half later I came upon Lora’s wonderful website on the net and from there it was all uphill as our group slowly disbanded.Lora’s Suzuki book 1 course was a huge help ,Fiddle Secrets and Learn to Read Music also have given me a leg up to propel me forward and the RDV and RDF FB sites are fantastic too! I look forward to contining to learn so much more about this fantastic instrument thanx to Lora, her great tech staff and the many wonderful fellow players here on the forum. Soooo looking forward to many many more years of inerfiddleaction with yawl!?❤️
I split my time between Portland Oregon & Helsinki Finland. I’ve only been playing about a year so I’m a fiddling noob but it’s a lot of fun to learn. My goal is to play along great with others and someday in a band.
I think you are probably not too far from having the ability to join a band! Start looking for bandmates!

I started to learn Suzuki violin with my grandson 3 years ago. I finally (!) learned to play the Irish tune “Sheebag Sheemore” for my recital this month. My grandson, who is 5 years old, played “Aunt Rhody.” Playing with others is fun!
Maureen, I hope the recital went well and that you are still fiddling with your grandson! That is so sweet!

Hi I am an amateur called Lin Leighton. I have been learning to play fiddle for about 5 years, and enjoy every moment. I play with my friends in sessions. I dance with a Playford Group, and play recorder with a Tudor music group, and we go round Care Homes playing for the inhabitants.
Hi, I am Linda Pickering and have played the violin for 14 years. I started taking lessons at age 36 along with my 5 year old daughter. I put the violin away after 10 years to take care of family and started playing again about 4 years ago and I am so sorry I ever stopped. I enjoy it so much and plan to play the rest of my life. I worked on a lookout tower for two summers after I graduated from high school and wished I would have played then. I waisted too many years before I found the joy of playing the violin and learning. I also am enjoying playing the whistle. Loved Lora’s fiddle course. I play lots of Scottish music (and other music) now and enjoyed the workshop with Alisdair Fraser last January and hope to go to one of Lora’s someday.
Hi. I’m a fiddler, violinist and recently a violist. I teach children and adult beginners fiddle and violin. I live just north of San Diego, Fallbrook, Ca. My husband is a violin builder and restorer. He also works on bows both for rehairs and restoration.
I have been playing for 12 years.
I play classical music in a beginning strings ensemble for the viola.
Music is such a joy of mine and it is so uplifting to go to fiddle camps, violin workshops, jams and viola lessons.
